Many of you are collecting signatures on a petition for the very first time. As a person who has collected names over the years, off and on, for various causes [renter’s rights, women’s rights, voter registration, etc] and a person well versed in the stigma associated with pot along with the blurred lines concerning patients and stoners, I’d like to offer up a few observations that I have encountered as I also gather names.

1. After your circle of friends, neighborhood [if you feel comfortable with the neighbors], and sympathetic relatives who are all registered voters [not those who promise they will be, unless you also have some voter registration forms to be turned in separately], the usual avenues you travel may not yield many registered voters or those willing to ‘sign something’. Sign these folks up as you meet them. Keep all counties separate.

2. Separate places for name collecting into places to be in uniform and with a friend Nurse and those where you can collect names incognito, as a Mata Hari. Some places could go either way.

3. There are two large markets of people to draw on, the closet/recreational stoner and the person who believes the government should stop wasting money. These are the most reliable registered voter types. Forget about going to where all the stoners are, and this is the reason for that. this isn’t the election. While it is important to get the amount of signatures needed, it is more important to make the average citizen aware that a law will be up on the ballot. The powers that be and the people pushing for the law, for opposite amounts of money, will not get the word out to the masses. This is our chance to do that and collect names.

4. You are not there to discuss or argue the cause. You are a volunteer, and if someone wants to debate, politely remind them you are a volunteer, therefore you are not paid to take shit, and walk away.

5. Places in uniform – Mother’s Markets, they are used to petitions but not uniforms. Best days – weekends, evening weekdays nights. Time to hang out for maximum signage – two weeks, they have a quick turnaround crowd. Also Whole Foods, because they have been hogging the spotlight as going GMO free. Both places should let you post up in the parking lot around the front door. Ditto schedule for WF. Another place to travel as Nurses in a pair is collecting names from one end of the subway route to the other during periods of medium traffic before end of day rush hour. Busy metro centers like the No Ho station is good. Again, a few days and a few different hours each time and you should get at least 80% of the usable demo.

6. Places out of uniform, plains clothes – Wal-Mart, supermarkets like Albertsons, Vons, and any upscale spot as the people who shop there see anything diff as ghetto. Profiling? Yes, but we aren’t there to pass judgment, just to collect a registered name. Don’t do this full time because you tend to burnout. Changes of location and uniform/uniformed spots also helps keep you fresh. Also if any of you are in a college, you may want to first see what is allowed on campus. If there is some sort of political cause day, sign up and start making signs. Appear then in uniform, collect names and kick ass.

These are some suggestions and I’m sure you will see places not included here. In the LA city/county area there are 8,000,000 people and all we need is 508K roughly from the whole state. LEGAL GREEN IN FOURTEEN
