Valerie and Mike Corral to Receive HT Lifetime Achievement Award
We are honored to bestow the HIGH TIMES Lester Grinspoon Lifetime Achievement Award upon Valerie and Mike Corral, the founders of WAMM.

Founded in 1993, the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) is the nation’s oldest continuously operating medical cannabis collective. By focusing on the needs of patients and caregivers, WAMM provides hope and builds community while offering a safe, organic supply of medical marijuana to patients with a doctor’s recommendation for the treatment of terminal and chronic illness.

WAMM has been described as “the gold standard of medical marijuana” by a federal judge. Valerie and Mike, a couple in Santa Cruz, CA, first started secretly growing marijuana together in the 1970’s, after Valerie found that cannabis effectively helped to control her epileptic seizures. Following a pair of arrests, the Corral’s resolved to help others facing similar persecution, and soon local patients started seeking them out.

In 2002, the Drug Enforcement Agency raided the WAMM garden and destroyed the collective’s entire crop of state-legal medical cannabis. Several members died as a result of being cut off from their supply.

In response, less than two weeks after the DEA raid, WAMM gathered on the steps of City Hall, alongside the mayor of Santa Cruz and other local officials, to defiantly distribute free medicine to members.
Next, with support from the ACLU and the City of Santa Cruz, WAMM successfully sued the federal government. The garden was subsequently replanted, and now grows more beautifully than ever.

Valerie and Mike’s compassion and commitment to the cause has been an inspiration to our community. They helped architect Prop 215, California’s historic medical marijuana law, and have long been a proponent of the true value of cannabis -- it’s ability to heal. On June 29, at the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, the cannabis community will honor Valerie and Mike Corral.

The HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup Awards ceremony

What is a Cannabis Cup?
It's a two-day trade show/EXPO incorporating vendor booths in a main building with an extended outdoor component for additional vendor booths. This year's event will take place at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds (1350 Bennett Valley Rd., Santa Rosa).

Inside booths range from glassware and clothing to grow equipment and artwork. Inside also features three seminars per day either in a sectioned off area off the main floor or in a private "theater" like setting. The seminar topics include legalization regulations featuring California experts, current political issues, grow seminars with HIGH TIMES editors as well as a cooking seminar from our own Cannabis Cookbook author.

The outdoor component is typically a fenced off area with privacy screening, not visible to the general public. Medicating (smoking) is allowed in this area for those with a valid medical card and a picture ID (for medical states). Visitors are wrist banded for entry. Security is posted to assure these regulations are followed.

No selling or distributing of cannabis is allowed.

There is Saturday night entertainment typically starting @ 8PM and lasting till @ 11PM.
Either at the venue or in another venue if room does not allow.

The entire event is protected by outside hired security. Every security company we're hired for these events has stated that we have the most polite and respectful attendees of any events they work (including sporting events, concerts etc.).

This event is a celebratory and informational gathering for vendors and patients.

In 2014, HIGH TIMES magazine will return to the San Francisco Bay Area for the fifth time. Each year, this event has increased in size and attendance. (Last year’s Cup even featured a Ferris wheel and circus performers.) As recreational cannabis hasn’t yet been legalized in California, our “medication” areas are restricted to medical marijuana patients.
