An elderly man was shot and killed June 27 in Littlerock when deputies tried to serve a search warrant for an alleged marijuana grow. The remote rural community is an unincorporated area in the high desert of Los Angeles County.

According to NBC4 Los Angeles, deputies entered a multi-unit rural property through an unlocked front door, and when they moved toward a rear bedroom they encountered a man with a handgun. A deputy fired, according to the Sheriff's Department.

"The suspect pointed the handgun at the deputies and a deputy-involved shooting occurred," a Sheriff's Department statement read.

The man died at the scene. Deputies seized the gun, marijuana, and pot-growing equipment at the apartment. Other residents of the complex were held by deputies but later released.

According to the Weed Blog, the as-yet-unidentified man is the nineteenth person to die in U.S. domestic drug enforcement operations this year, and the fourth in the past week.

The Sheriff's Department promised the shooting will be thoroughly investigated.

"Whenever an officer-Involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and it results in a fatality of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene," the department said in a statement, "These include separate investigations by the offices of the L.A. County District Attorney and the L.A. County Coroner, in addition to Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau."
