Oh man was last night a long night!
I attended the Watsonville City Council meeting where they voted for a new cannabis Ordinace for the city which currently has nothing in place for medicinal cannabis.
It all started when the City of Watsonville busted a local company Ethnobotanical for operating in the city illegally. Ethnobotanical sued the city in return, and won
The agreement was that Ethnobotanical was able to come up with a written ordinance regulating medicinal cannabis cultivation and dispensaries in the city.
Of course the city staff came back with several revisions and concerns, and last night we finally came to the point where there were four options presented to the council. They were told we need to vote this in by March 1st or the opportunity would be gone completely until the November ballot when we can vote for recreational use.
The meeting lasted until past midnight...
Many people spoke from the cannabis community and the public, and well as opposition from some mostly advocates for youth in Watsonville who felt it was dangerous to move this fast and vote for cultivation and dispensaries to open up in Watsonville.
In the end, they voted for option 4, Cultivation only.
This was not what we as the cannabis community were looking for here in Watsonville for patients to gain safe access to medicine, but I guess it's a start.
We will see what happens in November!
