His demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity,” Obama said. He described bin Laden’s killing as the “most significant achievement to date” in the U.S. efforts to defeat Al Qaeda.

Obama said he determined last week that the U.S. had enough intelligence to proceed with the operation.

The operation to kill bin Laden was launched earlier Sunday in Pakistan’s Abbottabad, a two-hour drive to the north of capital Islamabad.

Bin Laden was killed after a firefight in which no Americans were harmed and U.S. forces took custody of bin Laden’s body, Obama said.

Obama said it was a “historic day” for both the U.S. and Pakistan.

Obama said there is “no doubt” that Al Qaeda, the terrorist network that bin Laden headed, will continue to pursue attacks on the U.S., and that the U.S. must and will be vigilant against such attacks.

News broadcasts showed crowds gathering outside the White House ahead of Obama’s remarks to celebrate bin Laden’s death. The crowds were waving U.S. flags, singing the national anthem and chanting U-S-A, U-S-A,” according to an Associated Press report. Later images showed crowds gathering in New York City at the site of the attacks on the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.
